About us
People in Need (PIN) Nepal began as a humanitarian response to the April 25th, 2015 earthquake. The most destructive earthquake in 80 years hit Nepal with a magnitude of 7.8, leaving almost 9,000 people dead and 22,000 wounded. Immediately after the disaster, PIN provided emergency aid to the most afflicted and assisted those displaced to prepare for the winter months. We also helped with infrastructure rehabilitation and worked with local communities in Gorkha and Sindhupalchowk to address protection needs that arose from the insecure living conditions caused by the earthquake.
Later from 2016-2017, our teams continued to build resilience projects among the affected communities. We supported the reconstruction of earthquake-resilient houses and rehabilitated 125 kilometers of foot trails in the remote areas of Rasuwa and Gorkha. We also designed and organized school-based workshops for girls and boys to improve their safety, health, and leadership skills, and foster a gender-sensitive environment in schools.
From 2018 onward, PIN has supported government efforts for voluntary resettlement of populations at risk of landslides and advocated on behalf of the landless. We also coordinated with technical experts on housing reconstruction for the most vulnerable earthquake victims. In 2019, PIN rolled out its first inclusive education program in Terai, working with married out-of-school adolescent girls as part of the UK Aid Girls Education Challenge initiative.
