"Once the chicks grow, I'll sell the eggs, and chickens and make some income for household use. We can also consume the eggs and meat ourselves", says Kale Thami from the Sindhupalchowk district. Kale Thami is living with a disability after the lightning hit him several years ago. His only son left him and he is now living with her daughter and son-in-law and dependent upon them. Their only source of income is daily wages.

Most people living in the villages of Gorkha and Sindhupalchowk district are farmers who are dependent on daily wages or agriculture. Many households struggle for self-subsistence because the land is not fertile for cultivation and agricultural produce is limited. The 2015 earthquake exacerbated their economic condition as it triggered multiple landslides and destroyed fertile lands, affecting the livelihood of many people and making them more vulnerable. Many people lost their houses, properties, and family members too. Hence, these vulnerable households require external support to make ends meet on daily basis.

With the support of People in Need Slovakia's Real Gift, People in Need Nepal together with its local partner Phase Nepal distributed 20 goats and 916 chicks worth EUR 4,288 to selected 66 vulnerable households in December. The selected vulnerable people were single men and women, women-headed households, a person living with disabilities, and households with poor economic conditions. The project identified the vulnerable household through rapid need assessment, along with coordination and verification from the local authorities.

"I'll raise this goat, sell its offspring when they are older. That will provide me with an additional source of income, which will be very helpful in supporting my family", shares Nanimaya happily.

Kale Thami received 20 chicks and 15 kg feed, who is very thankful to the project for the support. Nanimaya Khatri received a goat as a real gift. She is the only breadwinner of the family and has been supporting eight members by herself since her husband is living with a mental disability. "I'll raise this goat, sell its offspring when they are older. That will provide me with an additional source of income, which will be very helpful in supporting my family", shares Nanimaya happily.

The real gift is important for these vulnerable people because they will have an additional source of income. They could raise the goats and chicks and continue their livestock cycle and make a living. Thanks to Real Gift and People in Need Slovakia for raising hopes for these vulnerable people by contributing to the sustainability of their livelihood.
